Loaded Jalapeno Chili Dog

Flavor packed with every bite.

Hot dogs are great for piling on delicious toppings because you get hot dog, the hot dog bun, and the toppings in each bite.

The hot dogs in this recipe are grilled on the barbecue and so are the buns.

Then the hot dog is topped with warm chili, and other scrumptious toppings that are piled high to the point where they’re almost falling off the sides.  yum.

Jalapeno Chili Hot Dog

When all of these toppings are combined with the hot dog, it’s a perfect match.

To top it off even further, a quick and easy creamy sour cream and salsa sauce is drizzled on top.

Here’s a link to the chili recipe that I used in this recipe, but canned chili works great too.

Let’s check out the ingredients.

Chili Hot Dog Ingredients

Hot dogs, chili, onion, tomato, jalapeno or Serrano hot peppers, avocado, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and hot dog buns

printable recipe with the measurements and instructions is located at the bottom of this post.

Here’s how to make it:

If a barbecue grill is used to cook the hot dogs, start by preheating the grill on low heat.

Chopped Onion on Cutting Board

Chop the onions,

Cut Tomatoes

…tomatoes,

Cut Jalapeno Pepper

…and hot peppers.

Cut Avocado

Then cut the avocado into bite size pieces.  This avocado was on the mushy side so I had to cut it in smaller pieces.

If the avocado wasn’t so mushy I would have cut it in larger pieces or even into slices.

Big pieces of avocado are so pretty as a topping on hot dogs.

Shredded Cheese

Shred the cheese.

Shredded Cheese and Tomatoes

Put the onions, tomatoes, hot peppers, avocado and cheese on a plate or in bowls for easy access and set aside.

Chili in Pot

Next, heat the chili in a small pan or in the microwave (using a microwave-safe bowl).

Hot Dogs on Grill

To a preheated grill, add the hot dogs (or boil them, or even cook in the microwave if preferred).

Hot Dogs on Grill

Turn them every 2 minutes until there are grill marks on each side.

Hot Dog Buns on Grill

Then add the buns face down on the grill (or toast, or steam them if you like).

Grilled Hot Dog Bun

One way to steam them is to lay a small cooling rack over a pot of boiling water and lay the buns on the rack for a minute or so;  just long enough for the buns to get soft.

Lay the toasted or steamed buns on a plate and add about ½ cup of warm chili to each bun.

Next,

Top with shredded cheese,

Onions on Hot Dog

I used red onions but yellow, white or even green onions can be used instead.

Tomatoes on Hot Dog

Sour Cream Salsa in Bowl
