Jalapeno Chili Dog

Hot dogs are great for piling on delicious toppings because you get a bit of the hot dog, the hot dog bun and the toppings all in the same bite.

It’s so delicious.

This jalapeno chili dog starts off with the classic combination of hot dog and prepared chili, then more scrumptious toppings are added to the point where they’re almost falling off the sides.  yum.

When all of these toppings are combined with a hot dog, it’s the perfect match.

To top it off even further, a quick and easy creamy sour cream and salsa sauce is drizzled on top.  So delicious with every bite.

Here’s a link to the chili recipe that’s in this recipe.  I make extra batches of chili and freeze it to use in recipes just like this one, or to have on hand for a quick meal.  But feel free to use your favorite chili in this hot dog recipe.

So let’s check out the ingredients.

Hot dogs, chili, onion, tomato, jalapeno or serrano hot peppers, avocado, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and hot dog buns.

Here’s how to make it:

If you use a grill to cook the hot dogs, start by heating the grill (hot dogs cook well on a low setting).

Chopped Onion on Cutting Board

Chop the onions,

tomatoes,

and hot peppers.

Then cut the avocado into bite size pieces.  This avocado was on the mushy side so I had to cut it in smaller pieces.

If the avocado wasn’t so mushy I would have cut it in larger pieces or even into slices.  Big pieces of avocado are so pretty as a topping.

Shred the cheese.

Put the onions, tomatoes, hot peppers, avocado and cheese on a plate or in bowls and set aside.

Next, heat the chili in a small pan or in the microwave.

Add the hot dogs to the grill (or boil them, or even cook in the microwave if preferred).

Turn them every 2 minutes until there are grill marks on each side.

Then add the buns face down on the grill (or toast, or steam them if you like).

One way to steam them is to lay a small cooling rack over a pot of boiling water and lay the buns on the rack for a minute or so;  just long enough for the buns to get soft.

Lay the toasted or steamed buns on a plate and add about ½ cup of the warm chili to each bun.

Then,

add the hot dog.

Next,

add the rest of the chili on top of each hot dog.

Next,

…top with shredded cheese,

and onions.

I used red onions but you can use yellow, white or even green onions if you like.

Then top with tomatoes…

…avocados and hot peppers.

We’re almost done.

Sour Cream Salsa in Bowl

Mix the sour cream and salsa together to make a sauce…

…add the sauce on top of all the toppings.

Lastly,

garnish with any remaining ingredients such as the cheese, onions and more hot peppers that you may have.

Time to eat!

dig in.

…and enjoy.
