Peach Tea Agua Fresca

It’s been so hot lately that ripening fruit on the kitchen counter can be risky business because it can turn overripe so quickly.

But the good news is that overripe fruit can be “repurposed” when using it to make an agua fresca.

About an Agua Fresca

Agua fresca (Spanish for “cool waters”) is a light fruit drink (a much thinner consistency than a smoothie or a slushy) that’s popular throughout Mexico.

It’s refreshing, easy to make and looks so colorful and pretty.

It’s generally made by blending fruit, water, sugar and lime, and then strained through a mesh strainer so the water is “infused” with the fruit flavor.

About this Recipe

But this recipe has a slight twist to it.

Instead of water, this agua fresca is made with cold brewed tea.

And since the peaches taste delicious as is, they’re not strained.

About the Cold Brewed Tea

After originally posting this recipe with tea brewed in the sun, I updated it to be cold brewed in the refrigerator.

I did this after learning that when tea is brewed in the sun there may be risk of bacteria growing.

This is because the heat from the sun isn’t hot enough to kill bacteria that may be in the container, water or tea leaves.

So now my go-to brewing method is a cold brew in the refrigerator.

Cold brewed tea needs to be made the day before serving it because it needs to brew overnight for at least 6 hours in the refrigerator.

Directions on how to make cold brewed tea are included below.

Feel free to substitute cold brewed tea with prepared iced tea of your choice.

To make the cold brewed tea for this recipe which is 2 servings, use a thoroughly cleaned medium-size glass container with a lid.

And fill it with 2 cups of cold water and add 3 regular size black tea bags (with the strings hanging over the top edge of the container).

Then cover it with a lid and put it in the refrigerator overnight for at least 6 hours.

After its brewed, remove and discard the tea bags from the container and store the tea covered with a lid in the refrigerator for not more than a day for the best flavor and freshness.

With a paring knife, cut the skin off of the peaches.

If the peaches are really ripe, it may be easier to peel the skin off with your fingers rather than using a knife.

When making an agua fresca with fruit that has a lot of pulp, for a thinner consistency the mixture can be poured thru a mesh strainer.

But for this recipe, the consistency was just right so no need to strain it.
