For the Apples:

  • 5 Granny Smith apples washed and dried off, stems removed
  • 1 package (14 ounces) Kraft caramels (unwrap each caramel)
  • 2 tablespoons water

Candy Decorations of Your Choice:

  • Candy eyeballs
  • Mini M&M candies
  • Candy sprinkles
  • Candy corn
  • Mini chocolate chips

  • 5 Popsicle or bamboo lollipop sticks
  • parchment paper

For Apples:

  • Preparing the Apples - Starting from the top of the apple, poke the popsicle or bamboo lollipop stick through the middle of the apple.
  • Step back and look to make sure the stick is centered and not leaning off to one side. If it’s leaning just remove the stick and try again. Set the apples aside.

For the Caramel:

  • Melting the Caramel - On a large plate, lay a sheet of parchment paper and set aside.
  • To a medium size saucepan, add the caramels (don’t turn the heat on yet). Once all of the caramels are in the pan, add water and turn the heat on low to medium. Continuously stir.
  • If the caramel starts to bubble turn the heat down just a bit. Continue to stir until the caramels are completely melted.

For the Caramel Apples:

  • Dipping the Apples in Caramel - Turn the heat down to the lowest setting possible.
  • Then hold one of the apples by the stick over the pan and spoon the caramel over the top of the apple.
  • Next tilt the pan slightly and dip all sides of the apple in the caramel.
  • Use the spoon to remove the excess caramel from the bottom, and lay the caramel coated apple on parchment paper.
  • Repeat the process for the remaining apples.  After coating the 3rd apple with caramel, turn the heat off of the pan.
Continue with dipping the remaining 2 apples in the caramel.

Decorating the Caramel Apples:

  • Decorating the Caramel Apples - As soon as all of the apples are coated add the candy decorations. The caramel dries quickly so you may have to push them into the caramel to stick.
  • If the candies aren’t sticking, melt some of the chocolate chips and drizzle or dab the chocolate on the apple. Then sprinkle the candies over the chocolate.
  • To make a funny face, use the rounded edge of a dinner knife to shape a smile and the lips, eyes, or nose.
  • As soon as the caramel apples are decorated, put them in the refrigerator so the candies and funny faces don't slide.
  • Serve at room temperature.

The two most important tips when making these caramel apples are:
  1. Be really careful not to touch, or get the hot caramel on you; and
  2. Use parchment paper rather than wax paper.
