For those times when you plain old have no energy left in the day to cook, how about a hot dog.

Not just any hot dog but one with juicy sweet slaw and topped with honey roasted peanuts.

Wait, peanuts? On a hot dog…seriously?  Sure why not.

And the best of all, how about a hot dog on a soft pretzel roll. yum.

I came up with this slaw dog for the sole purpose of using these amazingly delicious pretzel rolls that I found in the fresh bakery section at Walmart.  These rolls are so darn good.

For this recipe I grilled the hot dogs on the BBQ but feel free to pop them in the micro to save time.

Just don’t be like me and overcook them in the micro. They turn out severely unattractive, scary, and could even give you bad dreams.

So give these dogs a try.

And get some extra pretzel rolls while you’re at it.  A quick tip; pick the bag of pretzel rolls in the back of the shelf with the furthest pull date, so they’re nice a soft.  Soooo good.

Hot dogs, pretzel hot dog buns, green cabbage, carrots, green onions, mayonnaise, honey, Dijon mustard, yellow mustard (love getting 40% extra mustard and using a coupon at the same time), salt, pepper, honey roasted peanuts and black sesame seeds.

Here’s how to make it.

For the Slaw:

Real quick, a pic of my fave measuring spoons.  They’re Mickey Mouse hands from Dland.  Love them.

In a small bowl add the mayonnaise,

yellow mustard….

….then..

….Dijon mustard,

7-add-honey-to-bowl

and honey.

8-mix-mayo-mixture

Whisk together…

…and set aside for a moment.

10-cut-cabbage

Shred the cabbage…

…and add it to a medium size bowl.

Shred the carrots…

…and add to the bowl.

Chop the green onion and add it to the bowl.

Add the honey mustard to the cabbage mixture….

….the salt and pepper,

and toss all ingredients together until the cabbage mixture is lightly coated.

Set aside for a moment.

For the Hot Dogs:

Coarsely chop the honey roasted peanuts and set aside.

microwave or boil the hot dogs.

Cut the pretzel rolls in half lengthwise leaving the bottom of the bun uncut about an inch from the bottom.  Lay some of the slaw in the bottom of the bun.

Add the hot dog.

Top the hot dog with a bit of mustard if you like.

Top with the remaining slaw,

Honey Mustard Slaw Dog

Yield: Serves 3

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

For the Slaw:
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons Honey
5 cups shredded green cabbage (heaping)
1/3 cup shredded carrots
1 tablespoon chopped green onion
¼ teaspoon salt (or salt to taste)
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

For the Hot Dogs:
3 hot dogs
3 pretzel hot dog buns (or your favorite hot dog buns)
¾ cup whole honey roasted peanuts
1 teaspoon black sesame seeds (for garnish)

Directions:

For the Slaw

In a small bowl add the mayonnaise, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, and honey. Whisk together and set aside. In a medium size bowl add the cabbage, carrots, green onion, salt, pepper, and the honey mustard mixture. Toss all ingredients together until the cabbage mixture is lightly coated. Set aside for a moment.

For the Hot Dogs

Coarsely chop the honey roasted peanuts and set aside. Grill, microwave or boil the hot dogs. Cut the pretzel rolls in half lengthwise leaving the bottom of the bun uncut about an inch from the bottom. Lay some of the slaw in the bottom of the bun. Add the hot dog. Top the hot dog with a bit of mustard if you like. Top with the remaining slaw, chopped peanuts, and garnish with the black sesame seeds.
