Sour Apple Marshmallow Rice Krispie Treats
These crispy, chewy and colorful rice krispie treats made with green sour apple marshmallows are a fun and delicious twist on a classic finger food treat.
Marshmallow krispie treats are the best.
They’re super easy to make, have a little salt (in the butter), sweet (from the marshmallow), and crunch (from the cereal).
The perfect combination.
Marshmallow krispie treats can be fun to make too because cereal comes in so many pretty and vibrant colors.
About this Recipe
In this recipe, the krispie treats are made with rice krispies cereal with “spring colors” which has 2 additional colors in it, a light blue (similar to turquoise), and light green (similiar to a light lime color).
About the Candy Sprinkles
To add some sparkle, these krispie treats are topped with candy sugar crystals (sprinkles) that come pretty close to matching the blue and green colors in the cereal.
It kind of looks like jewels on top of the krispie treats and adds a nice crispiness to each bite.
I haven’t mentioned the best part yet, it’s the sour apple marshmallows.
I found these at Walmart and they actually taste like sour apple candy and are the perfect color to match the light green in the cereal and candy sprinkles.
About Decorating the Krispie Treats
As an option, the top of each of these krispie treats can be decorated with half of one of the sour apple marshmallows.
Since these marshmallows are in the shape of an apple, decorating the krispie treat is a nice touch.
A dollop of marshmallow creme can be used on the back of the marshmallow so it will stick on the krispie treat.
Since an entire package of sour apple marshmallows is used to make the krispie treats, there aren’t any leftover for decorating so you would just need to get an extra package of them.
These krispie treats are really good.
The sour apple flavor is just right, not too strong or overbearing.
Let’s check out the ingredients.
Krispie Treats – Puffed rice cereal with “Spring Colors“, Mallo Licious sour apple marshmallows and butter (salted)
Topping (optional) – Light blue, and light green sugar sprinkles (similar colors to the “spring colors” in the puffed rice)
Additional Optional Topping – sour apple marshmallows (cut in half lengthwise, to decorate the top of the krispie treats if desired); and marshmallow creme (used to stick the sour apple marshmallows on top of the krispie treats)
HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE
A printable recipe with the measurements and instructions is located at the bottom of this post.
For the Krispie Treats:
Grease the inside of a casserole dish or pan with softened butter (for this recipe a 12 x 8 size casserole dish is used).
Set aside.
In a large bowl, add the puffed rice cereal.
Set aside.
In another large bowl, (one that can go in the microwave), add the softened butter.
TIP – Make sure to use softened butter so that it will melt quickly along with the marshmallows when warmed in the microwave.
Then add all of the sour apple marshmallows that are in the package.
The package generally has 23 sour apple marshmallows in it.
Warm the marshmallows and butter in the microwave for 40 seconds.
The warmed marshmallows should look soft but not completely melted like in the picture above.
Then using a soft spatula, gently stir the marshmallow mixture…
…just enough so that it’s creamy.
TIP – Be careful not to over-warm or over-stir the marshmallow mixture or it will seize up (be sticky and stiff).
Next,
…to the bowl with the puffed rice cereal…
…add the melted marshmallow mixture.
Using a soft spatula or a large sturdy spoon…
…gently mix the ingredients together until the cereal is coated with the marshmallow mixture.
Transfer the mixture into the greased casserole dish.
Use a soft spatula to press the mixture evenly into the dish.
You can also use your hands with just a little water on them to press the mixture into the dish.
For the Topping:
TIP – The sprinkles need to be added to the top of the krispie treats as soon as possible so that they will stick.
For the Candy Sprinkles – Add the light blue and green sugar sprinkles evenly on top of the krispie treats.
Cover with plastic wrap.
Let the krispie treats sit on the counter for about an hour or until they’re set and can be cut.
Then cut into 12 squares (or the desired servings).
These can be served right after cutting them unless sour apple marshmallows are used as a decoration; then there’s one more step as follows.
For the Sour Apple Marshmallow Decoration (Optional):
Using kitchen scissors (that are for food only), cut the desired amount of sour apple marshmallows in half lengthwise (from bottom to top).
For example, for 12 krispie treats, 6 sour apple marshmallows are needed.
Try to make the cut so that the leaf on top of the marshmallow shows equally on each side.
Then using a dinner knife or small spoon, put a dollop of marshmallow creme on the back (cut) side of each halved sour apple marshmallow…
…and stick it on top of each krispie treat.
And…
…serve.
