Jalapeno Chili Dog

You know how it is when you hear a song and it gets stuck in your brain?

This happens to me often when the ice cream truck rolls around our neighborhood, and I just can’t get the song “It’s a Small World” out of my brain.

Shoot, I think I just started to hum that song right now.

The same thing happens when I’m watching the food channel and see certain foods that look so good, like hot dogs for instance.

Recently there was a show about hot dogs and they looked so very delicious with the chili poured over them, and all the toppings, that it got stuck in my mind.

So of course I had no choice but to make them.

This recipe includes all of the ingredients that taste delicious as a topping for chili.  And when combined with a hot dog, it’s a perfect match!

These are reeeally tasty.  And the extra dose of hot peppers are delicious with each bite.

Here’s a link to the chili that’s in this recipe.  I make extra batches of chili and freeze it to use in recipes just like this one, or to have on hand for a quick meal.

So let’s check out the ingredients.

Hot dogs, chili, onion, tomato, jalapeno or serrano hot peppers, avocado, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and hot dog buns.
Here’s how to make it:

If you use a grill to cook the hot dogs, start by heating the grill (hot dogs cook well on a low setting).

Chop the onions,

tomatoes,

and hot peppers.

Then cut the avocado into bite size pieces.  This avocado was on the mushy side so I had to cut it in smaller pieces.

If the avocado wasn’t so mushy I would have cut it in larger pieces or even into slices.  Big pieces of avocado are so pretty as a topping.

Grate the cheese.

Put the onions, tomatoes, hot peppers, avocado and cheese on a plate or in bowls and set aside.

Next, heat the chili in a small pan or in the microwave.

Add the hot dogs to the grill (or boil them, or even cook in the microwave if you prefer).

Turn them every 2 minutes until there are grill marks on each side.

Then add the buns face down on the grill (or toast, or steam them if you like).

One way to steam them is to lay a small cooling rack over a pot of boil water for a minute or so; just long enough for the buns to get soft.

Lay the toasted or steamed buns on a plate and add about ½ cup of the warm chili to each bun.

Then,

add the hot dog.

Next,

add the rest of the chili on top of each hot dog.

Next, for more yumminess…..

…..top with the cheese,

and onions.

I used red onions but you can use yellow, white or even green onions if you like.

Then top with tomatoes,

avocados and hot peppers.

We’re almost done.

Mix the sour cream and salsa together…..

…..and add to the top of all the ingredients.

Lastly,

garnish with any remaining ingredients such as the cheese, onions and more hot peppers.

Time to eat!

YUM for sure.

Enjoy!
