Banana, Blueberry and Oatmeal Smoothie
Just add a straw to this wonderful banana, blueberry and oatmeal smoothie, and enjoy a delicious breakfast on-the-go.
Are you picky about how ripe you like a banana to be before eating it?
Sometimes I have to buy them on the green side, so they won’t get too ripe before I have a chance to eat them.
There’s a particular point where a banana gets a little too ripe to eat as is for my taste buds.
So, I’ll convince myself that I’ll just let them get really ripe and then I’ll make banana bread.
Then 9 times out of 10 I’ll run out of time to make banana bread, see a couple gnats hanging around the ripe bananas, and out to the trash they go.
When bananas start getting ripe faster than they can be eaten, an option is to store them in the freezer for use in smoothies.
Freezing Bananas for Smoothies
To freeze bananas, just peel each banana and squeeze lime or lemon juice all over each banana.
Then put each one in a separate snack size plastic zipper bag, seal the bag up tight, and then store them in the freezer.
The frozen bananas hold their color nicely when citrus juice is added on them.
About the Ingredients
This smoothie tastes best when it’s really cold, so I like to use frozen blueberries, and a frozen banana if I have one.
And last but not least, this smoothie also has oatmeal in it which adds a slightly thick texture.
The oatmeal is first cooked and cooled before it’s added to the smoothie.
Enjoy this smoothie for breakfast, a breakfast on-the-go, or a refreshing snack.
About the Order of Ingredients
A rule of thumb is that liquids and soft ingredients go in first, and the harder ingredients go in last.
So, for example to the blender jar,
- First, add liquids such as juice, water or milk
- Second, add soft ingredients like yogurt, fresh (unfrozen) cut fruit and berries, or honey
- Then add items such as frozen cut fruit and berries, vegetables or nuts
- Lastly add the ice
When blending a smoothie, to avoid an air pocket from forming by the blade in the blender jar, there needs to be a good balance between the liquid and frozen ingredients (including ice).
Let’s check out the ingredients.
Banana, blueberries, cooked oatmeal (on the thick side), honey, cinnamon, flax seed (optional), ice cubes
